A collection of highly trained, experienced singers, OperaLite is a performing group led by Lewes resident Carol Kelly. A pianist, vocal coach, and repetiteur by profession, her goal is to de-mystify the operatic process in a fun-filled, “easily digestible” evening of ensembles and arias, all accompanied by sparkling commentary from Carol herself.

The singers are all accomplished operatic performers, with resumés boasting appearances at such venues as Glyndebourne, the Royal Opera House, and English National Opera, as well as other international houses such as La Scala, Rome, and the New York Metropolitan Opera.

Carol Kelly’s role as compère began 15 years ago, when she was on the faculty at Baltimore’s Peabody Conservatory of Music. While introducing scenes being presented by her young student singers, she began to develop a following, and the chair of the Opera department remarked that the audience probably came to the shows to hear Carol speak, not actually for the music itself.

Now, she has a reputation for making these excerpts accessible to both opera-goers and novices alike. Her facility in foreign languages, her diligent research into the background of the works and composers, as well as her wicked sense of humour and irreverent commentary fuse to make a delightful evening which is informative as well as entertaining.
